Birmingham City is expected to sign Phil Neumann, but it remains uncertain whether the deal will happen this month or in the summer.
Hannover 96 has successfully secured the signing of central defender Boris Tomiak from 2. Bundesliga rivals Kaiserslautern, which has led to an intriguing situation regarding their current player and Birmingham City’s transfer target, Phil Neumann.
Hannover, who are aiming for promotion to Germany’s top division by the end of the season, has been unable to convince Phil Neumann to sign a new contract, with his current deal set to expire this summer. As of now, Phil Neumann is free to speak to clubs abroad and negotiate terms.
Since joining from Holstein Kiel in 2022, Phil Neumann, a regular for Germany’s youth teams, has been a key player for Hannover, helping them remain in contention for promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2019.
Birmingham City, who made successful signings in the German market last summer, including central defender Christoph Klarer despite their relegation to League One, have a strong interest in Phil Neumann. The Blues have an advantage over their Bundesliga rivals as they are an overseas club, meaning they can now engage with Phil Neumann and his representatives.
It remains to be seen if Birmingham City can secure Phil Neumann’s transfer this month or, as was previously considered more likely, if they will wait until the summer. By then, they hope to bring the tall defender to the West Midlands, with their Championship status likely restored.
Meanwhile, Hannover’s sporting director, Marcus Mann, shared insight into how the club collaborated with Kaiserslautern regarding the transfer of Tomiak, whose contract also expires in the summer. “We’ve been monitoring Boris for a long time and had already agreed on a transfer for the summer. Now, after discussions with FCK, a good solution has emerged, allowing us to bring him in and integrate him into our squad.”
